Gary Wayne Brown

Gary Wayne Brown, 62, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, passed away on August 23, 2026. Born on October 17, 1963, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Gary brought positivity, laughter, and an unmistakable energy wherever he went. Larger-than-life and genuinely loved by everyone who knew him, Gary had a way of making people feel welcome and leaving a lasting impression on those around him.

Gary dedicated 35 years of his life to education and football, teaching and coaching in Texas, Hawaii, and Oklahoma. He graduated from Northeastern State University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Health, Phys Ed, and Safety and went on to earn his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Southern Nazarene University in 2015. Coaching was much more than a job to Gary; it was something he was passionate about and a way for him to make a difference in the lives of the young people he worked with. He was a dedicated coach who believed in showing up, working hard, staying positive, and encouraging others to be their best. The impact he had on his students and athletes will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.

Outside of coaching and teaching, Gary loved being outdoors and spending his time building and creating things, especially for his kids. He enjoyed working out, watching movies, eating Rice Krispie Treats and washing it down with chocolate milk, and cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners. Boomer! Gary shared a special bond with his soul dog, Kai, who was always by his side. He found great joy in spending time with his granddogs, Lilo, Chief, and Luna, who brought him endless love and lots of kisses.

Gary is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kim Brown; his son, Tristan Brown; his daughter, Kira Brown; his mother, Sharon Brown; his mother-in-law, Jena Rogers and fiancé Clinton Johnson; his nieces and nephews, Katie Vaught and husband Kyle, Bailee Brown, Blake Brown and wife Julie, Ty Brown, Sarah Gobin and husband Dylan, Bryce Brown and wife Brooke, Malyn Rogers, and Preston Waters; and many other family members, friends, students, and athletes whose lives he touched. Gary’s family meant the world to him, and he cherished the time he spent with the people and animals he loved.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Bill Brown, and his brothers, Randy Brown and Tony Brown.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tristan Brown, Bryce Brown, Blake Brown, Ty Brown, Kyle Vaught, Dylan Gobin, and Johnny Teehee.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Blackgum First Baptist Church to honor and celebrate Gary’s life. Following the service, a graveside burial will be held at Box Cemetery.

Gary lived a life full of purpose, laughter, and love. He had a gift for making people feel seen, supported, and welcomed, and his presence made an impact wherever he went. While he will be deeply missed, the memories, lessons, and love he leaves behind will remain with those who knew him for years to come.

Here is one final thought to leave with everyone who had the privilege of knowing Gary, let it be his own words. In his senior memory book, he wrote, “It matters not how long I live... but how.”
