In loving memory of Betty Lou “Amos” Pickard, a beloved matriarch whose love and warmth touched the hearts of all who knew her. Betty Pickard passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories. She was a devoted wife of nearly 75 years to Lawrence Pickard, a loving mother to Linda McLaughlin of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Larry Pickard of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and Karen Layne and husband Randy of Fresno, California, a cherished granny, sister, friend, and a proud Marine grandmother.
Born on December 5, 1930, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, “Betty Lou” to her family, grew up outside of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, in the community of Miller Ridge. Born with a love for the open air and the simple pleasures of life, Betty was a true tomboy at heart. She found joy in riding horses, milking cows, and exploring the beauty of nature. A proud Okie and a descendant of the Cherokee Indian tribe, she carried with her the rich heritage and values of her ancestors throughout her life.
During the 1940s, Betty’s family made the courageous decision to move to California to search for work. After only a short time, Oklahoma called them back. Betty graduated from Central High School in 1949. It was there, in a graduating class of 11 students, that she met her husband, Lawrence.
Seeking a life together, Betty embarked on a journey back to California with her husband and baby girl Linda. It was there that they built a new life in Dos Palos, filled with dreams and possibilities, embodying the spirit of perseverance and determination.
As a wife, Betty embodied dedication and devotion, standing by her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Daniel Pickard, through the joys and challenges of life for an extraordinary marriage just short of 75 years. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love, and inspiration to all who knew them.
As an office manager, in her 43 years at Nylander and Sorenson Equipment Company, Betty dedicated herself to her work with unwavering commitment. Her professionalism and integrity earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and clients, leaving a lasting impact on the company and all who worked alongside her.
Above all, Betty cherished her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She poured her heart and soul into nurturing her family, creating a warm and loving home filled with laughter, love, and delicious homemade meals. As “Granny” she delighted in spoiling her grandchildren with love, wisdom, and her famous pancakes. She created memories that will be treasured forever.
Betty will be deeply missed by her loving family, including her husband Lawrence, daughters Linda and Karen, son Larry, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, her siblings Wynona Burney, Emma Sue Brock, and Ronnie Amos, and countless family members. She was the epitome of love and sacrifice, always putting the needs of her family and friends before her own.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Vinnie “Lattimore” Amos, brother M.D. Amos, and Grandson Marine Corporal Joshua Daniel Pickard.
Our Mom and Dad’s heart always remained in their beloved Oklahoma. In 2021 they made the decision to return to their roots and build a home in Sallisaw. It was there, among the rolling hills and endless skies, that mom peacefully passed.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness, sweetness, and generosity of spirit. Whether it was a comforting word, a homemade meal, or a helping hand, she was always there for those in need. Her love knew no bounds, and her legacy of compassion will continue to inspire generations to come.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and family will gather to honor her memory and share stories of her remarkable life.
